August 2026 market update
Know which way the market is moving
Three official indicators point to a mixed picture: employment is growing, unemployment has edged up, and the latest vacancy release was softer.
An active market with mixed signals
Paid employment increased in May, while registered unemployment increased slightly in June. First-quarter vacancy data also showed a quarterly decline in industries dominated by private companies. For an applicant, that supports a broad search and careful targeting rather than waiting for one headline to turn positive.
Official market pulse
Three indicators. One wider picture
Periods differ because official vacancy, employment, and unemployment statistics are released on different schedules.
Vacancies in industries dominated by private companies fell by 3,700 from Q4 2025.
Employers were still recruiting at scale, but the latest vacancy release pointed to a softer quarter.
Open official sourceThe number of full-time unemployed people rose by 500 to 93,800 in June.
The rate remained low, but the latest monthly movement was slightly weaker for job seekers.
Open official sourcePaid employment rose by 2,300 people, or 0.1%, from April.
Employment was still expanding even as the unemployment measure moved up slightly.

A mixed market, not a single up or down signal
Employment and unemployment can rise at the same time because the labour force and the number of jobs are not fixed. Vacancy data describe available posts, not your probability of being hired.
Search broadly
Use more than one employer, city, and role label. A small monthly change does not remove viable opportunities.
Target carefully
Read each vacancy for eligibility, tasks, evidence words, and requested documents before writing.
Check the next release
Direction becomes clearer across several comparable periods. The next official vacancy release is scheduled for 25 August 2026.

The job-vacancy series changed industry classification and coverage in 2026. We use the published quarterly movement but avoid building a long historical comparison across the break.
